This list is semi-obsolete. It is being retained for historical
and cross reference purposes. There is a new tabular list of proposed top-level
Specialties (which mostly contains the same Area names as
the list below). The new list follows the Instrumentation 'Standard Block layout', this list does
not.
This is a list of proposed top-level Specialties. The major
requirement for a Specialty is that it has its own peculiar
vocabulary. Thus one Specialty may cross multiple professions or
industries, but its vocabulary should be distinct from other
Specialties.
Of course this is an impossible dream, but it provides a basis for
classification. If a term is used by multiple Specialties it should
reside within the Specialty with which it it most closely associated
or it should reside within the Specialty that coined it.
Sub-Specialties for fields like engineering and medicine can have
their own vocabularies and share their parents' vocabulary.
The Specialties below are grouped by their 'primary type', but since
they must also be Specified with one or more of the other types,
this 'primary grouping' is more of a convenience than an absolute
hierarchy.
This list currently contains less than 200 Specialties and
Sub-Specialties, so there is still plenty of room for growth even
before consolidating existing focal vocabularies. The number of
Specialties within a primary type is believed to be an indication of
the relative size of that focal vocabulary. Each of these top-level
Specialties has a potential vocabulary of 16.7 Million terms.
The term directly following the primary type (like Science -
integers) indicates the actual vocabulary for the aspects that only
contain that outer lath.
